4 weeks without a sig. w00t! Still no major cravings. I’m pretty pleased with myself and I’ll let you in on why:

You see, to stop smoking isn’t really that difficult. All it takes is a bit of self discipline, a pack of Nicorettes or some broccoli stalks. Easy-peasy. Now, if you add a rather tough diet to the mix, things might get a bit tougher.

It’s a well known fact that quitting smoking can result in weight gain. I knew I couldn’t afford to gain any weight, so I countered that potential problem by putting myself on the South Beach (SB) diet. I’m now in my 3rd week of phase 1 and things are going great. You can look at Phase 1 in SB as a “detox” phase, where you’re trying to eliminate insulin resistance.

I’m not going to bore you guys with details or weigh-ins and shit like that, but my overall goal is to end up with a BMI that is considered healthy. For me, that means loosing a little over 100 lbs. My plan is to reach this goal within a year. Wish me luck.

Whoa! Htf did I miss that you quit smoking?!?! That’s fantastic man!

Good luck on the diet too. I went through a similar thing when I quit smoking. There was no WAY I wanted to gain weight from where I was at the time, and well, you know the whole boring tale.

Are you happy on the SBD? I know you don’t want to post all the details, but it might be interesting to hear what you’ve lost etc, how you like the diet, what’s good, what sucks…etc.

    Any way, good work man!

So will your head actually be changing shape as it does in your illustration?

And kudos for tackling two things at once; I’m knowingly using eating as a way to quit smoking, and I couldn’t imagine quitting smoking and cutting back on food at the same time. Bravo, and just keep looking at the results of your effort and let that be your motivation to keep going.

    Good for you, that’s awesome!

Lemme know when you want to go running. :)

Thanks for the support guys – that helps allot, believe it or not.

@nathan I’ve just started SBD, so I can’t give you any detailed reviews right now. The first phase of the diet is the most restrictive – no bread products – no fruits – no sugar. And this is when you also learn /how/ to eat right … (you know 3 main meals a day + snacks in-between). Other than a manageable headache the first 3-4 days, I haven’t had any problems following the diet. It’s just a matter of planning. That’s it. I’m adding an extra week to this “detox phase”, because I frankly don’t have any problems following it.

In phase one you may loose between 8-12 lbs in two weeks. (I’ve lost 12 after two weeks) – but I guess this is mostly water. In Phase two you introduce more “normal” foods again – and this is the phase you stay in until you’ve reached your goal. 1-2 lbs weight loss per week is normal. AND: You’re allowed to drink wine – which is a must for me :)

I guess you can look at SB as a Atkins light – … but it’s really more of a life style changing thing than a diet. So far I like it.

@joey yep, re-shaping of heads is a unfortunately one of the bi-products with this diet (If you encounter limping, eye twitching and/or a chronic urge to belch operettas, please contact your doctor)

I’m really not cutting back on food. I’m actually eating way more now than I used to – it’s just /what/ I’m eating that has changed. So in that respect, SBD in combination with quitting isn’t all that bad. (but you don’t have a weight problem, so you go ahead doing what you feel work best for you – just be careful with all that broccoli though).

@don Thanks dude ! I’ll let you know when I’m signing up for Boston Marathon next year :) I’ve got some goals to meet first, but I don’t see why I couldn’t start running in a while. I might have a look at the program that you, Nathan and others have been following. It’s a bit too early for me though. ( my 30-60 min power-walks every day with the boys, is a start I guess)

Again, thanks for the support – I’ll try to keep ya’ll posted.
